Getting Started with Lyx

Learn how to invite Lyx to your server, run the initial setup, and start managing your community.

Prerequisites

Before adding Lyx to your server, ensure you have:

  • Manage Server permission on the target Discord server
  • A Discord account with 2FA enabled (recommended)
  • Basic understanding of Discord roles and channel permissions
Note: You must have "Manage Server" permission to add bots and configure Lyx. If you're not the server owner, ask an administrator to grant you this permission or have them perform the setup.

Verify Bot Permissions

After inviting Lyx, verify the bot has the correct setup:

  1. Check that Lyx appears in your server's member list
  2. Ensure Lyx's role is above roles it needs to manage (Settings → Roles → Drag Lyx role up)
  3. Verify Lyx has access to channels where you want it to operate
  4. Type /help in any channel — Lyx should respond with the command list
Important: Discord's role hierarchy prevents bots from managing roles equal to or higher than their highest role. Ensure Lyx's role is positioned above any roles you want it to assign or moderate.

Run Initial Setup

Lyx includes an interactive setup command to configure the basics quickly:

/setup

This command will guide you through:

  • Setting up the moderation log channel
  • Configuring welcome/goodbye messages
  • Enabling auto-moderation with safe defaults
  • Setting up autoroles for new members
  • Choosing your preferred language and timezone

You can also configure everything manually through the web dashboard.

Access the Dashboard

The web dashboard provides a visual interface for all configuration:

  1. Visit lyx.lol/dashboard
  2. Click "Login with Discord"
  3. Authorize Lyx to access your account info and server list
  4. Select the server you want to manage
Dashboard Access: You'll only see servers where you have "Manage Server" permission AND Lyx is installed. If a server doesn't appear, check your permissions or re-invite Lyx.

Configure Core Features

Start with these essential configurations:

1. Moderation Log Channel

/logs setup channel:#mod-logs

Set a dedicated channel for moderation actions, message deletions, and member events.

2. Welcome Messages

/welcome setup channel:#welcome message:"Welcome {user} to {server}! You are member #{member_count}."

Or use the dashboard for rich embeds with images and custom colors.

3. Auto-Moderation

/automod enable
/automod spam max_messages:5 time_window:10
/automod links block_all:false
/automod invites block_discord_invites:true

Start with safe defaults and adjust thresholds based on your server's activity.

4. Autoroles

/autorole add role:@Verified
/autorole add role:@Member

New members automatically receive these roles on join.

Next Steps

Common Issues

Commands not showing up

Slash commands can take up to 1 hour to propagate globally. Try typing / in Discord to trigger the command list. Ensure the applications.commands scope was included in the invite.

"Missing Permissions" error

Ensure Lyx's role is above the target user's highest role and the role you're trying to assign. Check channel-specific permission overwrites.

Dashboard shows "No servers found"

You need "Manage Server" permission on a server where Lyx is installed. Re-invite Lyx if it was removed, or ask an admin to grant you permissions.

Welcome messages not sending
  • Verify the welcome channel exists and Lyx has "Send Messages" and "Embed Links" permissions there
  • Check that welcome messages are enabled: /welcome setup shows enabled status
  • Test with /welcome test
